The backstory of the series kicks off before the games actually take place: a Capoeira Mestre named Mestre Katigura is retiring and needs to choose a successor. His two best students are Mestre Loka, a student that came later on, and Mestre Zumbi, who is named after the legendary capoeira King of Palmares himself. But, to Zumbi's shock, Katigura chose Loka to succeed him instead. Zumbi was so outraged that he left Katigura's (which then became Loka's) Capoeira school and founded his own, taking several followers with him. Now, Zumbi is constantly going out of his way to try to repay the humiliation he feels he received at Loka's hands. His latest chance to do this, in Capoeira Fighter 3, is on the grand "World Tour" Loka is planning to show off capoeira to the world, to prove that Zumbi himself is the best, once and for all.

After the fourth tournament, Lisa is seemingly working for Donovan with his new organization: MIST. He sends her to Tokyo to meet his client, but she is confronted by Hayabusa, who has overheard her conversation with Miyako on her cellphone and has confirmed MIST's existence. While Lisa tells him that it's her duty as a scientist to make new discoveries to change the world, Hayabusa replies that her discoveries have only brought suffering to him and his friends, and battles her afterwards. While escaping, Lisa accidentally bumps into Kokoro, who fights her with a demand for an apology. After the fight, Lisa asks Kokoro how Miyako is doing.
In the last chapter, there is some evidence that Lisa is a double agent working against Donovan like she did in the previous tournament. At the oil rig, Lisa finds Kasumi in the lab trying to free Hayate, who had been captured by Rig. Lisa realizes that Donovan is reactivating Project Epsilon and frees Hayate. When the four ninja fight Alpha-152, Hayabusa and the clone launch a ninpo at each other. The impact of their attacks creates a huge explosion, destroying the lab in the process. Lisa is seemingly trapped under the debris and her cry is heard; but she ultimately survived, although with severe enough injuries that she had to undergo rehabilitation for a time.
Free for Alls Occasionally, you'll be invited to participate in a free for all tournament. Each round pits four fighters against each other at the same time, and the last man standing wins the fight.
During the Nintendo Direct on September 4th, 2019, Nintendo revealed that more DLC fighters were set to be in production after the first Fighters Pass, due to Ultimate's strong sales.[2] As with before, Nintendo proposed the potential fighters and Sakurai passed final approval.[3] On January 16th, 2020, Fighters Pass Vol. 2 was announced alongside Byleth, with the previous Fighters Pass retroactively being dubbed Vol. 1.[4] The Pass includes six Challenger Packs; just like in Vol. 1, each pack contains one fighter, one stage, and several music tracks.[5][6] Both Byleth and Vol. 2 were made available for purchase on January 28th, 2020. These six packs had the release deadline of December 31st, 2021. According to Sakurai, this is planned to be the last DLC released for Ultimate.[7] He also expressed caution that the DLC characters for the Fighters Pass Vol. 2 could face delay or that development could be stopped indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic; although development continued through remote working[8][9] and ultimately went smoothly, without problems[10] and concluded on October 18th, 2021. Fighters Pass Vol. 2 was originally planned to have five fighters, like the first pass, but was increased to six when Sora's inclusion was successfully negotiated for.[11]
